Host a Student from Tulsa's Japanese Sister City
March 2024 Utsunomiya Student Delegation
Tulsa-Area Families,
Would you be interested in hosting a 14-year-old Japanese student, or one of their adult chaperones, from March 22-27th, 2024? This homestay program is designed to accommodate families who have a M-F, 8-5pm. lifestyle, and it’s a perfect opportunity to experience hosting without a lengthy commitment.
As a part of Tulsa Global Alliance, the Tulsa-Utsunomiya Sister City Partnership coordinates a short Study Abroad program for Japanese students, and we're always happy to welcome new host families!
Program Overview:
Friday, March 22nd: ~8:00 P.M. pickup at Tulsa International Airport
Saturday, March 23rd: Free day with host family. Ideas, best practices, and other orientation-style information will be provided.
Sunday, March 24th: Free day with host family.
Monday, March 25th: The Japanese student will accompany a host student at school. If you do not have a similarly aged child to chaperone the Japanese student at school, we will find a shadow student at a local school.
Tuesday, March 26th: The committee will take all 15 Japanese students and their Japanese adult chaperones on a tour of Tulsa! Tour activities will likely include the Tulsa Zoo, Philbrook Museum, scenic Tulsa landmarks, and more. Our committee covers lunch, admission costs, and transportation for this day. After the tour of Tulsa, we host a Farewell Dinner from 5:30-7:30pm during which all students and host families will gather and meet. In years past, the students have performed songs and given short speeches. Afterwards, we bestow Honorary Tulsan Certificates provided by the Mayor's office.
Wednesday, March 27th: 6:45 A.M. drop off at Tulsa International Airport
We have male and female students coming, and we’ll aim to pair appropriately for your family. The students are accompanied by 3 adult chaperones. By this age, the students have studied English for 2 years, so they’re able to speak and understand basic sentences. Nevertheless, in case of an emergency, we have their chaperones and our committee as a resource.
We will provide more orientation-style information for families that express interest. Thank you for your consideration! We're excited to continue this tradition and bring this opportunity to our Tulsa community.
